Former Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, entered not guilty pleas Friday in federal court in Richmond to corruption charges stemming from a 14-count indictment.

The state's former first couple face charges related to the gifts scandal that rocked the final months in office for Virginia's 71st governor. The indictment details a list of expensive items the McDonnells were accused of accepting and not disclosing.

After reading thecharges, "venal" is the word that came to mind. Mrs. McDonnell complained about expensive dresses and wedding receptions. People in the real world have ways of navigating around these kind of problems without getting into legal trouble. For one thing, there are many excellent consignment shops. And I've heard of brides-to-be making canapés for their own reception. For our wedding reception, my mother-in-law actually bargained with the hotel!
