Fredericksburg's Response to the 'State of the Union'

Fredericksburg area residents offer their comments on President Obama's State of the Union address.

What did you think of President Barack Obama's 2013 State of the Union address? These Fredericksburg Patch readers commented on Facebook.

What do you think?  Tell us in the comments section below.

"It was more of a campaign speech than a State of the Union address. He proposed ideas with no way to pay for them. He threatened to circumvent the Constitutional legislative process by the use of Executive Orders. He expects the economy to grow just because he said to would." - Michelle

"There was a State of the Union address last night? Let's see way too much spending, way too many unemployed and a heath care system that is going to cost a min. $20,000.00 per and the attack on the 2nd amendment. State of the Union= horrible and disgraceful, just my opinion." - Chris

"Didn't bother to watch as it is the same speech every year regardless of who the President or party in office is, it is the speech of the dis-union, plus the same Jack-in-the-Box clowns(Congress) popping up on to clap on cue like the monkeys they truly are." - Dan

"I've long ago grown tired of being spoon fed lies. I believe exactly zero words from these politicians. All I hear is, "blah, blah, blah, raping your rights, blah, blah, blah, taking your money." -Danielle

"I didn't vote for him, but feel as an American I must respect him and the position he holds. that said. I found his speech to be a great motivating tool with some good ideas and am hopeful that across party lines we can work together to pass the goals of the President to facilitate this country in moving forward!" - Tanya

"I liked the mention of IBM ( my company) working together for the kids futures. This is the type of schooling we need to be competitive. I am shocked that Clinton. Bushes and even Obama ignored this need and it took a visionary education leader in NYC to implement. And what's worse he made it sound like his idea or program. Aargh." - Chad

A full transcript of the speech as it was prepared is provided by the White House.

The Los Angeles Times has a topic-by-topic breakdown of the speech.

It breaks my heart to read those comments and see the politics of hatred and divisiveness thriving in Fredericksburg. It seems modern media has succeeded in dividing the United States. Compromise is seen as capitulation and our Nation suffers.

I thought the speech was good and to the point. We need better education, working with companies, making our kids ready for tomorrow. I agree with the gun bill and hope it passes. Knowing the good ole boys attitude I'm sure it will not. But they will get into my birth control and abortion business. Kill a living child but not a fetus? Anyway, I doubt the country will come together. The hate felt for his black leader is just horrible and mean

I enjoyed the speech and it is my hope that GOP can work together with Congress to acheive new goals in assisting people of this nation. We give millions of dollars to Israel and they dont agree with governances of this county. They money has to come from somewhere. So why do we give away money to foreign contries and no complaints for the people. Because they believe he is helping minorities. The truth is all people are suffering. I agree we need help in all aspects of this country.

Look at the editor of the local Fredericksburg paper. His dislike of Obama shows with most of the things he writes about. Next, look at the area. Lots of rednecks with gun racks and that is all they care about. Well that and a womans birth control lol. Seems to me the men down here are strickly one way. Their way or no way. Not that the women are any better. They think its their job to sit in eternal judgement of those who think differently. So sad... And they elected Eric Cantor for God's sake. This guy could give a rats arse about these poor voters.

Obama blatantly told the American people, in his "State of the Union Lies" that if Congress failed to act upon his initiatives he would back door the issues with Executive Orders (to have his way, not necessarily the American way). According to the Consitutation, the president does not have the power to issue EO's while Congress is in session. Now that Obama has made the threat of usurping the power of Congress, I believe that the those members of Congress who do not act to impeach the President must be impeached themselves. In addition to being boisterously malefeasant, the President has committed treason and should be tried for treason.

Comment correction: According to the Constitution ... and ... I believe those members of Congress ....

Second reading confirms the speech was filled with lies. Nothing comes close to being truth.

Every President has used the right of Executive Privledge. So why not this one? If it were just Obama I would be concerned. However, I have watched it happen before many times. Stop crying wolf.

Also Impeachment? That is the extreme rights answer to everything. You all spent 176 million dollars to impeach Clinton for fooling around. And the leader of the impeachment, Newt Gingrich who was in fact having oral sex with Calista under the Rotunda in limo's paid for by the tax payers. But you all still supported this. Bush wasn't impeachedd for lying, stealing, cheating and recklessly killing our children. And Obama was ELECTED by the MAJORITY not the minority. I pity folks like you who can't and won't accept the majority
