Mapping Quake Damage in Fredericksburg

Data on file at city hall shows concentration of damage in downtown historic district.

The Virginia has damaged more than 40 buildings in the city of Fredericksburg, with the vast majority of the Preliminary damage estimates on file with the city's office of Building and Development Services show that city inspectors have assessed roughly $260,000 in damages from the quake. That number is expected to rise as building inspectors continue to receive reports of damage.

The downtown concentration of the reported damage is not surprising to many involved in the post-quake damage assessment.

"The historic district does have the older - original, if that's the right term - section of Fredericksburg, with a lot of brick buildings and chimneys where a lot of the damage was reported," said Doug Fawcett, director of Public Works for the city of Fredericksburg. 

Fawcett's crews were primarily involved with assessing the city's wastewater treatment plant, water tanks and pumping stations. He reports that no damage was done to those facilities by the quake.

"Not even any suspicion of damage," said Fawcett. "It appears all of those facilities all held up to the earthquake quite well."

Also involved in the damage assessments have been the Fredericksburg Fire and Rescue services. With a hurricane threatening to rake the entire eastern seaboard with strong winds and rains, Deputy Fire Chief Mark Bledsoe says that he's worried some damaged buildings will take a double wallop of natures fury.

"We are concerned that people might not have time to secure any damage that they might already have," said Bledsoe.
