Mayor Tomzak Won't Seek Re-Election

Two term mayor announces intentions in email to City Council. Official announcement to be made on Friday morning.

Fredericksburg's Mayor Thomas Tomzak will officially announce tomorrow that he will not seek a third term.

An email from Assistant to the Mayor Robin Martin says he will make an official announcement at 11 a.m., Jan. 6, 2012 at his .

In an email sent earlier today to the City Council and city staffers, Tomzak says that he decided not to run after discussing it with family and friends.

"The past 8 years have been challenging and rewarding and I especially enjoyed working with City Staff," wrote Tomzak in the email. "You should be proud of what you do, I have been."

Tomzak defeated incumbent Mayor Bill Beck in 2004 to win his first political office.

Now the stage is set for challengers to vie for the mayor's seat. Vice-Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw and Ward 3 Councilor Fred Howe are both known to be eyeing the seat.

Howe himself was quick to send out a message to fellow City Council members and the media following Tomzak's email.

"While we may not have always agreed on issues this past 1 -1/2 years; please know that I think you are really one hell of a great guy and that you are one hell of a great Mayor – in my book", wrote Howe in his email. "The City is losing a seasoned leader and a fantastic Mayor."

Howe said he would be willing to explore terminating the contract to develop the new facility.

Fredericksburg is in an election year right now. Candidates have until March to file, and the election is on May 2. Only the two at-large seats and the Mayor's office are up for election.
