Road Crews Tackle Traffic Lights

Crews from VDOT will be out and about to make sure traffic flows.

Traffic signal technicians from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are working to repair traffic signals that are out of operation this morning in the 14-county Fredericksburg District.

Motorists are encouraged to be cautious as they drive through intersections. If motorists encounter a traffic signal lacking power, it should be treated as a four-way stop.

Nearly 300 Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) employees and more than 50 contractors continue to work this morning in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula to clear roadways of debris from Hurricane Irene, provide traffic control and detour routes, and restore service to all travel lanes as rapidly as possible.

VDOT maintenance operations teams will remove obstructions to clear interstate and primary routes first, followed by high-volume secondary roads, and then subdivision streets.  

Interstate 95, Route 1 and nearly all primary roads and high-volume secondary roads in the Fredericksburg area are clear and open to vehicle traffic. Route 17 is closed in Caroline County just east of Route 301 and Port Royal. A small number of secondary roads are closed in Caroline, King George, Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, although reports may change as debris and other obstructions are identified.

In the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, several dozen secondary roads are closed due to downed trees or tree limbs, utility lines or flooding. Most primary routes remain open in these areas. In Essex County, several sections of Route 17 are closed west of Tappahannock, and Route 17 is closed in the Jamaica area of Middlesex County.

The Robert O. Norris Bridge on Route 3 between Lancaster and Middlesex counties is open to vehicle traffic, following a closure yesterday due to sustained high wind.

The Gov. Harry W. Nice Bridge on Route 301 between Maryland and Virginia is open to traffic, following a closure on Saturday evening and Sunday morning for high wind.
