Roy Gordon: A Winner and Hall of Famer

Roy Gordon, who started the University of Mary Washington soccer program in 1977, knows how to win. He coached the UMW men's soccer team to 386 victories, has been named the Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year eight times and won the National Soccer Coaches Association of Americas Regional Coach of the Year five times.

And in February, Gordon was inducted into the Virginia-DC Soccer Hall of Fame.

On Friday at on William Street in downtown Fredericksburg, Sen. Bryce Reeves presented Gordon with a Virginia General Assembly resolution recognizing Gordon's achievements.

"It's really my honor and privilege to present this to you," Reeves told Gordon. After he gave him the framed resolution, the two ate Renato's Johnson’s Flat Chicken “Pollo Milano.”

After 41 years of coaching, Gordon said it was time to retire, but he does miss the student athletes.

Before he came to UMW, Gordon was the head soccer coach at the University of Maine-Farmington where he coached the team to 46 wins there, bringing his total career coaching victories to 432. He is one of only eight NCAA Division III coaches to reach the 400-victory mark, which he did in 2007. His overall record is 432–253–53.

"You hang around that long, you better win a few games," Gordon joked.

The resolution states that Gordon’s UMW teams played in nine NCAA tournaments and won eight CAC titles and "from the time the Eagles first made an appearance in the NCAA tournament in 1985, the teams subsequently amassed an outstanding .698 win/loss percentage—winning more than two-thirds of their games," the resolution states"

Gordon is the former president of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and in 2009 the organization recognized him with the prestigious Honor Award.

After a six-month retirement, Gordon agreed to work part-time with the UMW Advancement Office to help with athletic fundraising. and the university also just hired
