Three Year Road Repaving List Approved by Council

After three years of deferred maintenance, city leaders look to resurface local roadways.

The Fredericksburg City Council approved a resolution charting a map to repave 12 different sections of Fredericksburg's roadways over the next three years. The project would cost around $750,000 per year and would entail milling and paving some streets and the wholesale reconstruction of others.

According to information distributed to members of the City Council prior to last night's regular council meeting, the Fredericksburg Public Works Department settled on the list of streets after surveying city roadways for deterioration.

"While we found that many of the streets in the City require some degree of rehabilitation, we concentrated on those streets in the worst condition and/or with high volumes of daily traffic," according to City Manager Beverly Cameron. "The proposed streets require attention to prevent any further deterioration and thus more costly rehabilitation."

"This will not be the final action the council will take on any of these streets," said Director of Public Works Doug Fawcett at last night's meeting. "If you approve these streets tonight, shortly after 2012, staff will ask for the awarding of a contract for the streets on the 2012 list."

Councilor Brad Ellis noted that while the first year of the program calls for $750,000 worth of road repairs, next year's proposed city budget only allocates $500,000 for repaving efforts. Ellis inquired if more funds would be needed to meet the schedule set out in the resolution.

Fawcett replied, saying that it would require either a reduction in the number of streets on the repaving schedule or the allocation of more funds.
