Veterans Day History

Veterans Day is recognized every year in the United States on November 11, the day in 1918 when World War I fighting ceased.

It was the day "when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month," according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.

The national holiday was established to honor and thank all who served and serve in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans Day Ceremonies

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year at Arlington National Cemetery. The 11 a.m. ceremony begins with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns, followed inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans' organizations and remarks from dignitaries.

Quantico National Cemetery will hold a Veterans Day ceremony on November 11 at 10:30 a.m.
