VRE Adjusts Tuesday Trains to Government Shutdown

Virginia Railway Express (VRE) announced it is adding cars to its earlier trains Tuesday in anticipation of an early afternoon commuter rush due to the federal government shutdown.  The regular schedule is in effect.  "Unfortunately, we do not have the flexibility to operate VRE trains earlier," management said in a Tuesday morning announcement.

Amtrak Cross-Honor trains are available to VRE riders with a valid multi-ride ticket (Monthly, TLC, 10-Ride, 5 Day) and an Amtrak Step-Up ticket.  These can be purchased at all Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) and authorized VRE vendors.

The available Amtrak Cross-Honor trains are listed in the columns to the right of the VRE trains on the schedule. "Please be aware that Amtrak Cross-Honor trains make limited VRE stops; if you plan to ride one, please double check to make sure it makes your stop," VRE management said.  "We monitor the on-time performance of these trains and will send out notifications if the Amtrak Cross-Honor trains are late," they said.

VRE said it will notify riders by 6 p.m. October 1 as to which schedule -- an "S" Schedule or a full schedule -- the commuter rail will operate on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013.
