Top Military Communities: USAA Picks Stafford, Fredericksburg and Lake Ridge

Two Fredericksburg area communities stand out for affordability and convenience to military facilities.

Three area communities are top picks for military commuters in the D.C. region, according to the United Services Automobile Association.

The USAA has released it's 2014 Top Military Communities for five U.S. metro areas with the largest active-duty populations.

The study evaluated crime rates, affordability, schools, proximity to military installations and shopping and recreation.

For Washington, D.C., the list includes "West Stafford," Lake Ridge and "Northwest Fredericksburg." All three communities are just west of Interstate 95, and a fast commute to Quantico and Fort Belvoir.

“One of the most challenging aspects of moving to a new city is figuring out where to live,” said Maggie Hahn, a USAA employee and former military spouse.

Home prices were noted in selecting Stafford, while it was recreation opportunities that made Lake Ridge stand out. The USAA also noted that Fredericksburg offered larger homes and "reasonable rental prices."
