5 Signs Your Siding Needs to be Replaced

5 Signs Your Siding Needs to be Replaced:

The siding on your home does a yeoman’s job of protecting your home from heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, pests—you name it. How do you know when it’s time to replace your siding? Do you know what to look for? Here are 5 signs that your home is looking for new siding:

1. Peeling and cracking—If your current siding shows any signs of cracking or peeling, or a faded, chalky texture, it may be letting air and water through to the inner layers of your home. It is important to have a professional siding replacement team evaluate any peeling or cracking in your siding as soon as you notice it.

2. Buckling and warping—Buckling and warping are more signs of moisture infiltration into your siding, which means it needs to be replaced before that moisture makes its way into your home. If left alone, it can lead to rotting, mold and mildew; and you don’t want any of that in your home!

3. Interior problems—If you notice paint or wallpaper peeling off of interior walls of your home, or any water stains, the problem could be that water is infiltrating through old or defective siding. Mold and mildew are also very bad signs of moisture getting in where it shouldn’t. If you notice this inside your home, it is critical to have a professional inspect the problem to find out what the source of the water is and have it remedied as quickly as possible.

4. Dry rot—If your siding is weak in any area, it could allow dry rot to infiltrate and weaken the layers beneath your siding. Dry rot is actually a certain kind of fungi that eats wood for breakfast, lunch and dinner, causing it to become weak, crack and eventually disintegrate. Dry rot can let moisture into your home, which would cause buckling, interior problems and cracking in the siding. Dry rotted areas need to be replaced and properly protected to prevent future infiltration.

5. Higher energy costs—When the siding isn’t working properly, it will leak air in and out of your home, which makes maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature more difficult and costly.

Also: it’s a good idea to periodically inspect the siding around your home to check for any damage. This is especially important in the spring, after a long, hard winter, or after significant storm events with a lot of wind, rain and hail.
