All 17 Stafford County elementary schools will now end the day at 3:40 p.m. The start time will remain at 9 a.m. for all schools.
"This permanent change to the schedule will allow all of our elementary school students to receive the required instructional time each school year especially when inclement weather or other reasons impact attendance," said a statement from the school system. "The additional time provides elementary schools the time equivalent of nine days in reserve for the 2012-2013 school year should we miss days (or parts of days) for inclement weather or other reasons."
Middle schools already have nine days and high schools have eight days of reserve. All Virginia school divisions must provide a minimum of 180 days or 990 instructional hours for all students. For the elementary level, recess and lunch cannot be considered as instructional time.
Questions can be sent to your school principal or the Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education and Support Services Pam Kahle at 540-658-6000.
