City Schools to Consider Resource Officer at Walker-Grant

School board asks school staff for safety recommendations, one month after Sandy Hook shooter killed 20 elementary school students.

Fredericksburg City Public Schools (FCPS) will consider adding a full-time resource officer at Walker-Grant Middle School.

The idea was raised during Monday night's school board meeting, the first since the Newton, Conn. tragedy.

"During comments under Good of the Order, a statement was made by Board member Jannan Holmes on behalf of the Board expressing appreciation for the collaborative efforts of school staff and the local police department to keep our students safe," Debbie Wright, clerk of the board, told Patch. "The Board asked staff to present a report in February on ways that school safety might be enhanced and whether or not a full-time school resource officer should be placed at Walker-Grant," Wright said.

There is currently one full-time school resource officer serving at James Monroe High School, Wright said.  This position is funded by the Fredericksburg Police Department.

The next school board meeting is Feb. 4 in City Council Chambers. The closed work session begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the open meeting at 7:30 p.m.
