UMW Lady Eagles Continue Undefeated Streak

The University of Mary Washington's women's basketball team is at its highest ranking in three years in its quest to remain undefeated. The team beat York College on Saturday 54-48.

In one of the closest games of the season, the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team held off a late comeback attempt from their division foe York College to remain undefeated with a 54-48 victory Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania. The Eagles are now 23-0, one of four undefeated teams in Division III.

Senior guard Katie Wimmer and junior center Carol Dye each scored 16 points and added six rebounds against the Capital Athletic Conference's second-best team, York College.

The Lady Eagles were ahead the entire game and had a lead of as high as 11 points but York College cut the deficit to just four points at halftime, 25-21.

At the 4-minute mark in the second half, neither team was able to score for more than two minutes until a layup and free-throw shot by York's Brittany Hicks made the score 43-49 in UMW's favor. UMW missed several scoring opportunities to put the game away but York was unable to capitalize.

UMW out rebounded York 52-37, led by sophomore Aby Diop 11 rebounds and Sam Partonen nine rebounds.

UMW's regular season finale is  6 p.m. Wednesday against Stevenson University. The women's team is enjoying their highest ranking in three years, at No. 8 in the D3hoops.com poll and No. 7 in the USA Today/ESPN National Coaches Poll.
