UMW 'Breaks Ground' for New Campus Center

The new four-story building, expected to open by the fall of 2015, is being built in the footprint of the former Chandler Hall on Ball Circle.

Construction has begun, and VIPs with golden shovels threw some dirt Friday afternoon in an official Campus Center groundbreaking ceremony at the University of Mary Washington.

The Campus Center will include a retail bookstore, a large ballroom and student offices and meeting spaces. In addition, it will house the James Farmer Multicultural Center and the Center for Honor, Leadership and Service.   Student dining facilities will comprise the fourth floor.

The cost of the project is estimated at $60 million.

Speakers at the September 20 event included Student Government Association President Stephanie Preston, class of 2014, and Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw.
