Riester's 18 Lifts UMW Men Past Salisbury, 66-62

UMW men's basketball improves to 9-4 with conference win.

Sophomore guard Bradley Riester scored 18 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 66-62 win at Salisbury University in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening. The Eagles remain unbeaten in CAC play at 4-0, while improving to 9-4 overall.

The Eagles trailed at halftime, 36-32, but quickly tied the score early in the second. With the score tied at 40, UMW went on a 9-0 run, but the Sea Gulls answered with seven straight points to cut the deficit back to two at 49-47. Riester and senior guard Mike Harvey each hit big three pointers to keep the Eagles ahead, and Riester canned a pair of jumpers and two free throws down the stretch. Senior guard Walt Smith scored 12 points, including a pair of free throws in the final minute to keep the Eagles up by three.

Riester went 7-15 from the floor with a pair of three pointers, and had four rebounds. Smith made 3-7 shots and 6-9 free throws and didn't commit a turnover in the second half. Harvey went 4-6 from the floor with 3-3 on three point attempts in 20 minutes. Freshman Sean Armstrong had eight points and four rebounds and senior forward Henry Brisibe added eight points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles shot 43 percent from the floor, with six three pointers and went 8-13 from the free throw line. UMW committed 16 turnovers, but caused 19 turnovers from the hosts.

Mary Washington will host York College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. as part of another CAC doubleheader with the women.
