UMW Men Top Shenandoah, 67-49

Eagles improve to 4-1 on the year.

Sophomore guard Walt Smith scored 14 points off the bench to lead four Eagles in double figures as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team topped Shenandoah University, 67-49, on Sunday at the William M. Anderson Center. The Eagles, winners of four straight, are 4-1 on the year.

UMW opened the game with a slim lead through the opening minutes, holding onto a 13-11 lead with 10:20 to go in the half. The Eagles went on a 12-3 run to up the lead to 11 at 25-14 with 5:10 to play, and upped the advantage to 17, at 37-20, by halftime. Senior guard Ryan Farrar posted 11 first half points, with senior forward Ryan Henderson adding 10 in the opening frame.

Another run, this time a 12-2 outburst upped the halftime advantage to 24 points at 54-30 on a Taylor Johnson free throw with 10:38 to go. The Hornets were able to close the gap to as few as 14, but the Eagles held on for the 18-point victory.

Smith led the Eagles with 14 points, adding three assists and three steals, while Henderson scored 12 with six rebounds. Sophomore guard Matt Boward scored 12 points and Farrar ended with 11 for UMW. Shenandoah was led by James Bowens' 10 points and six rebounds.

The Eagles will open Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday at Stevenson University at 8:00 p.m.
