UMW Men's Basketball Falls to Hood in OT

Overtime loss sends UMW to 13-8 record.

Freshman Cameron Cook scored a game-high 34 points to lead Hood College back from a 17-point first half deficit to defeat the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday in Capital Athletic Conference action at Goolrick Gymnasium. The Eagles fall to 13-8 overall and 7-6 in CAC play.

UMW jumped out to an early lead, with a 16-7 margin with 15:01 remaining. Hood was able to cut the deficit to three at 24-21 with 9:58 to go, but the Eagles went on a surge, leading 44-28 with 3:30 left. UMW enjoyed a 50-35 halftime advantage.

Hood completely turned around in the second half offensively, going from 37% in the opening half to 66% in the second. The Blazers led by six at 87-81 with 3:06 left, but UMW answered with six points by freshman Walt Smith and four from junior Ryan Henderson to take a two-point lead with seven seconds left. Hood center Tyler Snoots made a layup to tie the score and force overtime.

In the extra period, Hood was 6-7 from the floor, while the Eagles went cold, going 4-11 from the field, which sealed their fate. The Eagles were led by freshman E.J. Willis, who scored 19 points, while Smith added 18 points and 11 assists. Junior Mike Harvey and Henderson each scored 15, while Tad Dickman scored 11 and Bradley Riester 10 for UMW.

The Eagles will host York College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in another important CAC clash.
