The Rappahannock YMCAs are competing for a Livestrong Community grant that will help the branches provide a service to cancer survivors that includes free membership.

Paul R. Gehring, the YMCA's vice president of facility and maintenance said that the program offers any local cancer survivor and his or her family a free 12-week membership at the YMCA so they may participate in an exercise program specifically designed to assist them in returning to an active life.

"This program is one of the most popular and effective community impact projects LIVESTRONG provides and we would love to be a part of it," he said in an email.
