Rappahannock United Way Gets High Marks
Charity Navigator gave Rappahannock United Way a four-star rating for managing its finances, which the president said is an acknowledgement that the nonprofit is meeting its core values.
A nonprofit that evaluates the financial health gave the Rappahannock United Way a high rating, which the president said is a sign that it is meeting its mission.
Charity Navigator gave Rappahannock United Way (RUW) a four-star rating—a level obtained by only about 25 percent of the 5,000 nonprofits that it evaluates. Charity Navigator measures a charity’s ability to effectively manage and grow its finances. Rappahannock United Way uses 86.6 percent of its funds toward programming, with the remaining funds split between administrative and fundraising costs.
Representatives of RUW say that the rating means that donations do return to the community for those in need. RUW President Janel Donohue said the rating is significant.

“Our donors and grantors entrust us with their most precious gifts: time, resources, and money, so Rappahannock United Way works diligently to ensure the highest return on their investment," he said. “The Four Star Charity Navigator Rating is an acknowledgement that we are living our core values—stewardship, accountability, integrity, service and respect—and we are delighted by that.”
RUW also got a four-star rating from Charity Navigator in 2010. According to Charity Navigator’s website, four stars means the nonprofit “exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its cause.”
