Carl's serves soft serve ice cream, also called Frozen Custard. Traditional flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry are available. There are a variety of toppings from which to choose. Sundaes, malts, floats and shakes are also served here. Carl's Ice Cream shop is a historic landmark for the city and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

Awesome! A great tradition to look forward to each February as they re-open for the spring!
Carl's, located almost at the end of Princess Anne Street, has been an iconic Fredericksburg ice cream parlor for more than sixty years and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2005. It serves the most basic flavors - vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry - with options of cones, dishes, shakes, malts, sundaes, floats, and slushes. Though some of its fans continue to call the soft serve "custard", it fails to meet the minimum level of egg yolks required under Virginia law to advertise as such, and is, in fact, ice cream. It is a very popular spot, especially during warmer months and on holidays and after school when the line sometimes wraps around the building. Luckily, their service system allows even the longest lines to move quickly and smoothly. The quality of the ice cream is consistent but average. Their prices are a bit steep considering the quality, but when you pay for ice cream at Carl's, you're doing more than enjoying a sweet cold treat - you're supporting and participating in the living history of Fredericksburg.
