Poll: Is .05 Too Drunk to Drive?

The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended lowering the legal blood alcohol content limit to 0.05 from 0.08. Tell us: Would you support a lower BAC? Do you think it would curb drunk driving?

Having a few drinks at that summer barbecue? You may soon have to be even more careful before getting behind the wheel. This week, the National Transportation Safety Board voted on a recommendation that would lower the legal limit for drivers' blood alcohol level to 0.05, arguing it would significantly reduce the drunk driving-related deaths reported each year. In Virginia and DC, along with all other states, the legal limit is now 0.08 — the equivalent, for a 180 pound man, of around four 12 oz beers in an hour, according to this blood alcohol content (BAC) calculator. A limit of 0.05 would hold a 180 pound man to fewer than three beers an hour before he gets behind the wheel; a 140 pound woman would be just over the limit after consuming…

My mother was killed by a drunk driver in 1981 - the man had a .11 BAC. .10 was limit back then. He was a 55 year old man that fell asleep on a Friday night while driving. He was not out partying - he was working his second job filling vending machines at bars. I am guessing that maybe he had a long week with too little sleep and a beer in each bar he visited. Do I think that lowering the limit …   more ›

VA GOP Nominates Ken Cuccinelli for Governor's Race

Cuccinelli formally received the nomination Saturday at the Virginia Republican Convention.

Virginia Republican Party delegates officially nominated Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to run for governor at its state convention Saturday in Richmond. Cuccinelli, 44, essentially locked down the Republican nomination in November 2012, when outgoing Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling announced he wouldn’t be seeking the nomination. Bolling cited party officials’ vote to change the nominating method from a primary election to a convention as the main reason for withdrawing his hat. "I see a Commonwealth where our people once again lead in liberty and opportunity," Cuccinelli said in his address. "Where striving to achieve is respected, even when we fall short, and it’s celebrated when we succeed. I see a Commonwealth where we restrain our debt so we …

Police: Man Used Deceased Woman's Debit Card

William Darr, Jr., has been charged with burglary, larceny and fraud. Where an arrest is mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Fredericksburg police officers responded to a room at the George Washington Motel May 12 for a report of a deceased female.  Family members had come to the motel to check on their relative, and called police when her death was discovered. Investigators determined the death of the 58-year-old woman was not suspicious in nature, police spokesperson Natatia Bledsoe said. On May 15, the investigating detective received information from one of the relatives that the wallet belonging to the deceased was missing, Bledsoe said. Additionally, a fraud investigator from a local bank informed the detective the debit card belonging to the deceased had been used to make purchases at local businesses the day after the victim’s death. Weird News: Prom Date on a Horse, Cicadas for a Snack and Beds Racing in the Street

Plus, saving the sparrows in this week's roundup of weird news.

Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening in at least one of them. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Weird Virginia/DC usually runs on Patch sites every Saturday.   A West Potomac High School student wanted to ask his date to the prom in grand style. That's why he rode in on a horse. Senior Ian Thompson  rented a horse, and with a bouquet of red roses, rode to sophomore Nikki Amico's house and asked her to the prom. Thompson said he had a few ideas on how to ask Amico but they were quite expensive. The "prom-posal" was the first time he had ever ridden a horse. She said yes, by the way. Review and Trailer: 'Star Trek Into Darkness:' Excitement at Warp Factor 10

This film is rated PG-13.

Boy, this is going to be one short review. This movie has more spoilers than the 1967 Enterprise had Tribbles…and in the interest of full disclosure, this is written by the Cinema Siren who owns chairs from the Voyager show, can list the original episodes in order of appearance, has a T-shirt with a quote in Klingon and a model of the Enterprise signed by all the original cast members. That is to say, fandom lives here. Any experience of watching the new release by director J. J. Abrams would naturally be filtered through a brain steeped in Star Trek knowledge and lore. That being said, there is, unlike some long-term fans, no automatic hate for anything new. To my mind, the cast, theme, and story lines of the reboot are very much in …
