Gas Main Struck, Homes Evacuated

Four homes in College Heights were evacuated Monday night.

A utility crew working with a backhoe to repair a water main break struck a natural gas line, causing the evacuation of several residences in College Heights Monday night, said Michael Jones, Deputy Fire Chief, Fredericksburg Fire Department, in a press release. All homes in the area were monitored for the presence of gas in the buildings, and at least one was ventilated of the fumes after the flow of gas was stopped. Fredericksburg Emergency Communications received a 911 call at 10:17 p.m., reporting an outside natural gas leak in the vicinity of Brent Street and Rappahannock Avenue.  Fredericksburg Fire Department units discovered a city utility crew had struck the two-inch gas main while digging in the street near this intersection. UMW Keeps Open Door Policy With Local Residents

The night after a successful and well-attended community meeting that aimed to bridge the chasm between college students and local residents, city officials, elected leaders, local residents and college officials met again for a "Town and Gown" session.

University of Mary Washington officials continued engaging local residents during a meeting yesterday that followed a well-attended session the night before aimed at repairing the school's image with local communities. The meeting is called "Town and Gown." The meetings have taken on an important role because of the increase in the number of complaints about students. A total of 19 people attended the meeting at Jepsom Alumni Center. Complaints run the gamut, from littering and noise to drinking and parking. College Height resident Clyde Mathews is the chairman of the group, and this was its first meeting. Doug Searcy, UMW's vice president of student affairs, said that Wednesday's meeting that the Student Government Association organized …

College Students Look To Repair Image

About 150 people, mostly students, attended a community meeting at the University of Mary Washington that was put together by the Student Government Association as a way to repair relationships with local residents.

In a room with almost 150 University of Mary Washington students, Clyde Mathews, a 76-year-old man who has lived in College Heights for 37 years, provided his perspective on why local residents are complaining more about the behavior of some students. He told the students last night at a community meeting in Lee Hall that they are at the beginning of their adults lives and he is at the end of his. He's been retired from the federal government for 15 years and he planned to live his best years in College Heights. He just celebrated his 50th anniversary with his wife, to which students applauded. One of his top goals was to buy a nice house, build equity and pay it off, which he has finally done after 30 years. Students applauded again.  But…

I'm also a UMW grad and a current Fredericksburg resident, although not in College Heights. I also read the post Mathew Kelly referred to wherein readers were asked if they "remembered being 18-21," and almost laughed out loud. The post was ridden with such childish self-entitlement. Then I read of the College Heights resident who is questioning "sleepovers," for UMW residents of College Heights…   more ›

Policing College Sleepovers Was Quest Of College Heights Local

Rodger Provo tried last year to convince City Council members and zoning staff to prohibit college students from having boyfriends or girlfriends spend the night because it created parking problems in certain neighborhoods.

Clarification: Other people have complained about parking problems in the College Heights area in general and some have complained directly to Mr. Provo. That was not clear in an earlier version of this story. A College Heights resident who has led the charge against unruly behavior of University of Mary Washington students tried last year to convince City Council members and city zoning staff to prevent students from having their boyfriends or girlfriends from sleeping over because it created parking problems. The resident, Rodger Provo, wrote City Council, UMW's president and the director of planning and community development in November 2011 that coed sleepovers at a home on Stafford Avenue were creating parking problems for residents …

Residents, Officials Complain of Rowdy College Renters

Fredericksburg's elected leaders want to meet with officials from the University of Mary Washington to hash out a strategy to deal with problem residences in city neighborhoods.

College students living off campus are taking center stage in an ongoing debate among city officials about how to better deal with repeat violators of Fredericksburg's neighborhood nuisance laws. The Fredericksburg City Council now wants to meet in person with representatives from the University of Mary Washington to discuss how to address problems which may be caused by students living off campus. A UMW representative was supposed to have attended last night's City Council meetings, but had to cancel citing a death in the family. Fredericksburg Mayor Thomas Tomzak had harsh words for the university, which he said was "oblivious" to the problems caused by their students in residential areas of the city. Nuisances Get Second Look …

@Annoyed Student and others: Nothing is stopping you from registering to vote here in the city. If you want council members who listen to students instead of creeps like Rodger Provo, then VOTE here. Vote people like Fred Howe and Brad Ellis who only care about your neighbors out of office. You'll be doing us all a favor. Oh, and hardly anyone votes in local elections. If you get a couple of …   more ›
