University of Mary Washington (UMW) philanthropy class students awarded more than $10,000 in grants to three Fredericksburg-area nonprofit organizations Dec. 3. The presentation ceremony was the culmination of the semester-long Economics of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector course taught by Professor of Economics Robert Rycroft, according to a UMW press release. The class of 26 students received 53 applications for the grants, funded by philanthropist Doris Buffett’s Learning by Giving Foundation and $500 raised by students. “We chose the recipients based on how well the programs they wanted to fund fit in with our mission statement,” said Taylor Knight, a junior in the class. Local charities will be the beneficiaries of the university's Economics of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector class.
Thanks to philanthropist Doris Buffett's Learning by Giving Foundation, the University of Mary Washington's Economics in Philanthropy class will be giving away $10,000 in grants to local charities. This fall, students taking the Nonprofit Sector course, which is in its eighth year, will learn how to create a nonprofit, solicit for grant nominations, review funding applications and determine the recipients. The grants are made possible through Doris Buffett’s Learning by Giving Foundation. This year, grant applications will be available in mid-September, with a deadline of the end of October. Cal Ripken Jr. was unable to make it to Friday's ribbon-cutting ceremony for Sunshine Park in Bragg Hill, but he had written a letter of thanks to philanthropist Doris Buffett and her support of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation and the park. Kevin Bingham, COO of the Ripken foundation, read the letter. Ripken said in the letter that years ago Doris Buffett and Warren contracted her about building a ball park in Fredericksburg for youth at-risk children. "Little did we know this idea would blossom into a wonderful and beautful park that you are at here today," Ripken wrote. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for Sunshine Park in Bragg Hill was today with numerous dignitaries and hundreds of parents and children in attendance. The park has three baseball/softball fields, two of which have artificial turf and there's an educational center with interactive programs for kids. Fredericksburg City government and the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation in 2007 partnered to build the youth baseball and softball complex. Kevin Bingham, COO of the Ripken foundation, said the goal is to have 50 similar parks across the country built by 2015. The fields will host Little League games and youth from Fredericksburg, as well as Stafford, Spotsylvania and King George counties. Ability Field is for special-needs children and can accommodate …

For Fredericksburg-area youth, Sunshine Park is more than fields of dreams. There's hope, a lot of love and a ton of hard work behind the new baseball field park on Wicklow Drive off of Fall Hill Avenue in Bragg Hill, where officials and more than 200 people gathered Friday for a grand opening of a third artificial grass field and the William and Patti Lynch Education Center. Fredericksburg resident Doris Buffett is the Virginian of the Year, an annual award from the Virginia Press Association. Free Lance-Star's chief editor, Ed Jones, nominated the local philanthropist for the award, according to the Washington Post and The Free Lance-Star newspapers. The VPA award is typically given to Virginia natives and residents who have excelled, with special consideration to those who have worked to improve the lives of others.
