Fauquier Plane Crash Victims Identified

Investigators from Canada are gathering as much perishable data and evidence as they can before they will analyze it to try to figure out how the midair crash happened.

The two victims of a midair small plane collision on Memorial Day have been identified as Paul Gardella Jr., 57, of Burke, and James M. Duncan, 60, of Bethesda, MD. Duncan was the pilot of the Beechcraft BE-35 plane and was a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) employee. Gardella was a flight instructor. The crash happened just over six miles from the Warrenton-Fauquier Airport. The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday that the crash happened at about 4:21 p.m. A Piper PA-28, owned and piloted by Thomas R. Proven, 70, of Broad Run, and a Beechcraft BE-35 collided midair about 30 miles north of Fredericksburg. Canadian Authorities To Investigate Fauquier County Plane Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA will let the Transportation Safety Board of Canada investigate Monday's plane crash because one plane is registered to an FAA employee and the other is an NTSB employee.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will be investigating Monday's midair plane crash because the two planes involved are registered to federal employees. The National Transportation Safety Board said today that the midair crash happened at about 4:21 p.m. A Piper PA-28, owned by Thomas R. Proven, 70, of Broad Run, and a Beechcraft BE-35 collided about five miles from the Warrenton-Fauquier Airport in Sumerduck, which is about 30 miles north of Fredericksburg.  Proven crash landed the Piper in a field and was transported to Mary Washington Hospital, where he was in good condition as of Tuesday morning. Fauquier Plane Crash Pilot Recovering At Hospital

Thomas R. Proven, of Broad Run, remains at Mary Washington Hospital after he was involved in a midair plane collision on Memorial Day.

A Broad Run pilot who survived a midair collision with another plane in southern Fauquier County on Memorial Day is recovering at Mary Washington Hospital. Debbie McInnis, the hospital's director of public relations, said Thomas R. Proven, 70, is in good condition. He has declined requests for interviews, she said.  The pilot and passenger of the other plane involved in the crash died after it caught on fire, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. The bodies were transported to the medical examiner's office for identification. The crash happened at about 4 p.m. Monday. The Piper PA-28 that Proven was piloting is also known as the Cherokee. Two Dead In Fauquier County Plane Collision

Two planes collided mid-air Monday afternoon. A pilot and passenger in one plane died and the pilot of another was transported to Mary Washington Hospital.

One of the planes involved in a mid-air collision Monday afternoon in southern Fauquier County is owned by the Provens from Broad Run. According to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller, who spoke after the crash, the two planes landed about a mile apart. Parts of both planes and debris remains scattered throughout the crash scene. Geller said one of the planes caught fire at impact, and two bodies have been recovered from the six-seat aircraft. She said the bodies of the pilot and passenger were transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner. The adult male pilot of the other plane survived the crash and was transported to Mary Washington Hospital. That plane, a Piper PA-28-140, is owned by Thomas R. Proven and Carol B. …

Two small planes collided today in Fauquier County, killing one. Another patient was taken to Mary Washington Hospital for injuries.
