Photos: Fredericksburg the Day After Sandy

The Rappahannock River continues to rise, but police report no major storm related problems in the city.

The Rappahannock River is expected to crest at 17.4 feet at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, and flood stage at City Dock is 18 feet, according Natatia Bledsoe, Fredericksburg Police Department Public Information Officer.  As of 1 p.m., the river at City Dock was at nine feet.  Most businesses are open Tuesday. It is cold and rainy, but other than the river, there is no evidence that Sandy passed by. VDOT Warns of Dangerous Road Conditions

Fredericksburg District crews will monitor roads throughout the night.

VDOT reports its crews in the 14-county Fredericksburg District will continue to monitor roads for high water, flooding and downed trees and power lines throughout the night. Portions of Route 17 at Tappahannock, Harrell Road and Brooke Road in Stafford County are among the roads posted for high water. Numerous roads in the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck region are closed due to high water. Click here for a complete list of road closings and high water advisories in the 14-county district.  Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling in these areas and other low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. Monday Evening Update: Sandy Becomes Post-Tropical Cyclone

The National Hurricane Center increased its predictions for rain and top wind speeds with Hurricane Sandy in DC and Northern Virginia.

  For information and updates on Tuesday, Oct. 30, click here.   Update 7:10 p.m. Monday: Hurricane Sandy has morphed into Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy and is very close to making landfall, according to NOAA. Sandy is expected to bring near-hurricane force winds and flood-producing rainfall through much of Tuesday. NOAA added that the most severe portion of the storm will affect the DC metro region from 6 p.m. Monday through dawn on Tuesday. "Residents and businesses along the Potomac River...should prepare for a flood not seen since the floods of 1996," NOAA said in an advisory. Around 7 p.m., data show about 90,000 Northern Virginia customers are without power, along with about 18,000 in Maryland's Prince George's and Montgomery counties…

Worst of Hurricane Sandy to Hit Monday Afternoon in Northern Virginia

Sunday afternoon update: Most schools closed. Several inches of heavy rain, sustained winds up to 45 miles per hour, wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour.

City's Emergency Operations Center to Open at 7 a.m.

Fredericksburg residents urged to prepare in advance, as widespread power outages and downed trees are expected.

Natatia L. Bledsoe, Public Information Officer with the Fredericksburg Police Department, released an update on the City's storm preparations on Sunday afternoon.  The complete text follows: "The City of Fredericksburg is monitoring the weather predictions and preparing for Hurricane Sandy as the storm approaches the coast.  The Emergency Operations Center in Fredericksburg will be open and staffed by 7 a.m. on Monday morning in order to manage the City's response to the damage that is anticipated from the high winds and heavy rain.   "The leading edge of the storm should reach our area by Sunday night, and the worst of the weather is expected to be felt from noon on Monday through noon on Tuesday.   "Residents should be prepared for 4-6 …

UPDATE: Hurricane Sandy: State Agencies, Police On Standby

Gov. Bob McDonnell reminded residents to prepare for power outages and cold weather in a telephone press conference Saturday afternoon. Dominion warns of prolonged outages.

(UPDATE 4:10 p.m.): Power outages for its customers could be "prolonged" in Northern Virginia due to outages from the coming storm, Dominion Virginia Power advised in a news release sent out Saturday afternoon. "This storm system will build in intensity over time and will remain a force for days, not just hours, causing major damage and extensive power outages," said Rodney Blevins, vice president of Distribution Operations, in a news release. "Its effects will be felt for days along much of the East Coast." Saturday Afternoon Update: Hurricane Sandy to Bring 60 mph Winds, Heavy Rain Monday and Tuesday

Rivers could continue to flood Wednesday through Friday, National Weather Service warns.

Update 12:30 p.m. Saturday - Hurricane Sandy briefly diminished Saturday morning and turned into a tropical storm, but the storm has since picked up speed and is a hurricane once again. "These subtle upward and downward status changes make no difference in the major, widespread impacts we expect in the next few days," The Weather Channel reported.
