VDOT crews will patrol the Fredericksburg District for icy conditions
With temperatures expected to remain below freezing overnight, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will remain on duty to monitor conditions and treat roads in the Fredericksburg District, VDOT said in a press release. Crews and hired forces are also expected to remain mobilized Friday morning in advance of the afternoon's predicted inclement weather. "Motorists should proceed with caution, especially on secondary roads where sections of snow, ice or slush remain," VDOT said. An additional two to four inches of snow is forecast for the 14-county Fredericksburg District Friday afternoon and evening. The Fredericksburg area could receive another 1 to 2 inches of snow Friday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). A winter weather advisory was issued Friday morning. Snow is expected mainly between 1 and 9 p.m. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent, according to the NWS. Friday's predicted high is 31 degrees. An ongoing list of closings and cancellations in the Fredericksburg area due to weather conditions Jan. 17 - 18.
1:30 p.m. Jan. 17 All after-school activities at Fredericksburg Academy are cancelled today. The Lower School Open Classroom Night is rescheduled for Jan. 24, the school said. The Fredericksburg Eagles 4123 ladies' auxiliary meeting is cancelled for tonight. 1 p.m. Jan. 17 Spotsylvania Parks and Recreation has cancelled all evening activities for Jan. 17, according to an email from the county. 12:15 p.m. Jan. 17 Germanna Community College will close all campuses at 2 p.m. today, the school announced. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews in the Fredericksburg District will begin 24-hour emergency operations at noon today, VDOT announced in a press release. Preparations are being made in advance of forecasted snowfall Thursday afternoon and evening. "Motorists are encouraged to monitor weather forecasts and limit travel," VDOT said. VDOT reports nearly 900 pieces of equipment are available to remove snow from the roads, and apply sand, salt and other chemicals in the Fredericksburg District. VDOT has 35 trucks available to target Interstate 95, plowing snow and treating ramps, bridges, and travel lanes. With a National Weather Service winter storm watch in place for the Fredericksburg area Thursday, personnel at Dominion Virginia Power, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are in preparation mode. Le-Ha Anderson, a Dominion Power spokeswoman, said the company is making sure their trucks are ready to respond if there are any power outages. She said the utility company has a team of meteorologists tracking the storm. “Wet snow with some wind could cause some power outages,” Anderson said. “We urge our customers to be prepared with an emergency plan with phone numbers and nonperishable food, just in case there are some outages.” VDOT will have hundreds of trucks ready to roll Thursday morning…
