Road Conditions: Clear to Moderate in Fredericksburg Region

VDOT crews are clearing and treating roads as weather conditions change.

Interstate 95 and primary roads are clear this morning in the Fredericksburg region, while snow is falling in western Spotsylvania County and secondary roads there have snow-covered patches, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) staff report. VDOT rates road conditions as: Road conditions vary along the Middle Peninsula. Primary roads in Essex, King & Queen and King William counties are in minor condition with isolated areas of snow. Secondary roads in King William, which received several inches of snow, are in moderate condition. VDOT crews remain on duty this morning to clear and treat roads in response to changing weather conditions. Delays and Closings March 18 in the Fredericksburg Area

Delays, closings and cancellations affecting Fredericksburg area residents. The list is alphabetical.

Culpeper County Public Schools will be closed Monday.  Twelve-month employees should report at 10 a.m. Fredericksburg City Public Schools will have a DELAYED opening Monday.  All schools and offices will open 2 hours later than usual. Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation has cancelled all morning classes.  The regular schedule will resume at 10:30 a.m. The Dorothy Hart Community Center will open on time. Orange County Public Schools are closed March 18. Essential personnel should report to work at specified times to perform emergency services. All other 11 and 12 month employees may report to work up to two hours late or utilize annual leave. Saint Michael the Archangel High School in Fredericksburg is closed. Winter Weather Advisory for Fredericksburg Area

The National Weather Service has issued the advisory for the Fredericksburg area, including the counties of Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, Stafford and Prince William.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for the area from 8 p.m. Sunday through 2 p.m. Monday. The Fredericksburg area could see rain changing to sleet and snow Sunday evening through Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Snow accumulations of one to two inches are expected.  The heaviest snow is expected Sunday night, and is predicted to mix with sleet Monday morning before changing to rain Monday afternoon. Temperatures will be in the low 30s Sunday night into Monday morning, rising into the upper 30s Monday afternoon. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging caution for Monday morning's commute.  Crews are mobilizing at midnight to clear and treat roads as needed…

This Week's Weather: Warm Start to Week, Possible Showers Tuesday

Weather starts out in the 60s Monday, gets chillier through the week, forecasters predict.

The Fredericksburg area will enjoy another spring like day at the start of the week, with a high of 66 degrees on Monday, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Monday: Partly cloudy skies Monday will lead to precipitation later in the evening. The National Weather Service predicts an 80 percent chance of rain Monday night. Tuesday: Forecasters predict rain Tuesday during the day. Temperatures Tuesday will hit a high of 61 degrees. By Tuesday evening, the rain should clear out of the area, with partly cloudy skies and a low around 37. Wednesday: The day will dawn clear and sunny, with a high near 54 degrees for the day. VRE Plans Full Schedule Thursday

Passengers advised to plan extra time for commute.

Virginia Railway Express (VRE) plans full service for Thursday. "That said, you may want to want to factor extra time into your commute," officials said in a service alert. "The roads to your station may not be in pristine condition so allow extra time for driving." All VRE platforms were cleared Wednesday and will be treated for possible icing overnight, the railway reported.  Passengers are still advised to use extreme caution when walking on exposed surfaces, including parking lots and station platforms. "Never run for a train -- even if the weather is clear," VRE officials said. "It is always a possibility there will be residual delays from the weather, so please dress warmly in case you find yourself outside longer than normal," VRE …

Fredericksburg City Public Schools will be closed Thursday. Code Red for 12-month employees. Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation classes and tax assistance are cancelled March 7.  The Dorothy Hart Community Center is scheduled to be open. Fredericksburt Regional Transit (FRED) reports no a.m. or p.m. VRE feeder bus service (VF1 and VS1) or D6. All other routes will be starting two hours late on Thursday. Germanna Community College locations will open at noon Thursday. Hugh Mercer Elementary School family reading night March 7 has been postponed.  A new date will be determined. Winter Storm Warning Continues Wednesday for Fredericksburg Region

More snow and rain are expected, with high winds and low visibility.

A winter storm warning remains in effect through 3 a.m. Thursday for the Fredericksburg region, according to the National Weather Service. Snow is expected to continue throughout the day into the evening, tapering off after midnight.  Precipitation could be heavy at times, especially west of I-95.  Total daytime snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches in the Fredericksburg area is possible, with an additional 1 to 3 inches possible tonight. Temperatures are predicted to remain steady in the low to mid 30s. Northeast winds at 15 to 25 miles-per-hour, with gusts up to 35-miles-per hour this afternoon and evening are expected to make driving dangerous, and could bring power outages. VDOT: 'Ready for Snow in Fredericksburg District'

Motorists are encouraged to limit travel tomorrow during snow, high winds.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has positioned staff, materials and equipment for a rapid response to the winter storm predicted for the Fredericksburg area. "Crews will begin 24-hour emergency operations at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Fredericksburg area," VDOT said.  "We have 462 pieces of state and hired equipment ready to deploy in the region, including 50 trucks dedicated to clearing and treating Interstate 95 and the interstate ramps, bridges and overpasses. Salt, sand and chemical supplies are fully stocked."  Motorists are encouraged to limit travel Wednesday, to allow VDOT crews to clear the roads.   High winds and heavy, wet snow may cause downed trees and power lines.
