Local Pipe Bomb Suspect on Trial in Montana

Laurence Alan Stewart faces multiple charges in Virginia and Montana. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

The trial of Laurence Alan Stewart II began this week in Cascade County, Mont.  Stewart was captured in Montana Nov. 1 after a traffic stop led to his identification as a wanted suspect for capital murder in Virginia.  On Oct. 30 Stewart allegedly detonated three pipe bombs at three locations -- one in Fredericksburg and two in Stafford -- in what Stafford Sheriff Charles Jett said were targeted attacks against his former fiancée and two Stafford deputies who had arrested him previously. As local law enforcement hunted for Stewart, he fled to Montana.   He is charged there with seven counts of attempted deliberate homicide. Charges against the suspect include attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer.

A computer memory card mailed to the home of Laurence Alan Stewart II's father shows the suspect's plans for three bombings in the area, reported Keith Epps of the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. "The father’s roommate placed one of the memory cards into his computer and began watching a video in which Stewart talks about his involvement in the attempted slayings of the former girlfriend and the Stafford officers, court records state," said Epps. Stewart is being held in Montana, where he was captured Nov. 1 after a nation-wide manhunt. Police: Bombing Suspect Captured in Montana

The Stafford Sheriff’s Office said Laurence Alan Stewart II allegedly threw pipe bombs at at pursuing law enforcement officers.

The Stafford County Sheriff's Office announced at about 2:30 p.m. today that Laurence Alan Stewart II has been captured in Montana.  “Preliminary information received from Montana is that a pursuit ensued which resulted in a number of pipe bombs being thrown at pursuing law enforcement officers," said a release from the Stafford Sheriff's Office. "Stewart’s vehicle was disabled by law enforcement officers. Stewart left his car and ran on foot, armed with a handgun. He was taken into custody." The sheriff's office release said "this has been a rapidly developing incident and we will have an update as more information becomes available." Police Identify Second Car of Alleged Attempted Murder Suspect

Laurence Alan Stewart II is being sought for attempted capital murder of local law enforcement officers.

The Virginia State Police issued an alert Thursday morning identifying a second car the suspect Laurence Alan Stewart II may be using. The car is identified as a 2000 White Nissan Altima sedan with Pennsylvania plates HLM-1923. At a press conference on Wednesday, Stafford County Sheriff Charles Jett said the suspect may be driving a red 2012 Hyundai Accent sedan with Virginia plates WXA-8249.  The suspect might interchange plates on the vehicles. Laurence Alan Stewart II Sought for Attempted Capital Murder

Law enforcement agencies are asking the public's help to locate this armed and dangerous suspect in pipe bomb incidents.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with several other agencies is looking for a 25-year-old white male in connection with three bombings in the area on Tuesday; one in Fredericksburg and two in Stafford County.  Laurence Alan Stewart II, age 25, of no fixed address is considered armed and dangerous, said Stafford County Sheriff Charles Jett. "This man is a serious danger to society and has already attempted to murder two law enforcement officers," said Jett. Stewart is being charged in Stafford County with two counts of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, two counts of arson of an occupied dwelling and one count of use of a weapon or device for a terror act.
