Milk to Veggies
Fed up with excessive government regulation and exploding overhead costs, one local dairy farm switched gears and became an organic produce farm. This is the story of Miller Farms.
Jo and Wayne Miller own a farm down Orange Plank Road, not far from my house. Many times I'd driven past a picturesque home and a charming series of farm buildings on my trips to use the Alderman library in Charlottesville, but this time I noticed a sign painted on the side of a building that read, unmistakably, "Got Milk?" No way there's a store in there, I said to myself, but I resolved to stop on my way home to see what could be had so close to my home, which is several miles from any grocery. At this point, in 2007, I had read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma and a few other books in an earnest attempt to remake my body into something a bit more height–weight proportionate—and, perhaps, help it achieve a reasonable life–span. …
