Two Planning Commissioners Honored

City Council recognized the service of two commissioners.

Susan Garnett Spears and Shawn Lawrence were honored by City Council Tuesday night for their service as planning commissioners. Spears served from July 2008 - Oct. 2012, and Lawrence from Oct. 2010 - Oct. 2012. Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw recognized both for their "outstanding and exemplary service to the City of Fredericksburg." "It has truly been an honor to serve," Lawrence said.  "I'd like to thank my wife Dorothy, who kept my food warm for me after every long meeting," he said. "It's an honor for all of us to serve," Spears said.  "We all do it for the love of the city." The Planning Commission conducts public hearings to consider applications for special use permits, site plans, subdivisions, rezonings and zoning text amendments. …

Council Narrows Renwick Decision to Four Choices

The Council discussed several options for reuse or renovation of the historic Renwick Building Tuesday night.

City of Fredericksburg council members took two ideas for the renovation and reuse of the historic Renwick Building off of the table during a City Council meeting Tuesday night.  After a work session discussion, the council decided against donating the Renwick Building to a nonprofit as well as sale of the building to a private party.  City Manager Beverly Cameron reviewed a "Renwick Decision Model" with council members during Tuesday night's work session. The Council had drafted the three part working document the previous week, with input from city staff. "The model provides very good background information to help frame the discussion," said Cameron. It is comprised of three parts: the goal, definition of objectives and definition of …

Performing Arts Center is Priority For Mayor-Elect

Fredericksburg Mayor-elect Mary Katherine Greenlaw told about 35 advocates of arts and culture that working on a performing arts center is a top priority for her in her first four-year term.

Fredericksburg Mayor-elect Mary Katherine Greenlaw told a group of arts and culture advocates that the city doesn't need to reinvent the wheel to have a performing arts center here. To bring the idea to fruition, she wants to create a workgroup of stakeholders that can work on a proposal. "I guess you could call me a lifetime advocate for the arts," Greenlaw said as the keynote speaker for Wednesday night's annual meeting of The Arts and Cultural Council of the Rappahannock (ACCR) at the Mansard Gallery on the third floor of the Fredericksburg Area Museum. Greenlaw said all the city needs to do is look at other communities that have created successful performing arts centers and see which one of those models fits best for Fredericksburg. …

Greenlaw Will Focus On Performing Arts Center

Minutes after winning the election, Mary Katherine Greenlaw told the media she wants a performing arts center in Fredericksburg and will focus on trying to make it happen.

Mary Katherine Greenlaw, a lifelong resident of Fredericksburg, said she worked every Saturday with her campaign officials since the beginning of January to win this race. It paid off today when she earned 51.55-percent of the vote in the Fredericksburg mayoral election. She defeated Fred Howe, who remains on City Council, by almost 500 votes and third place finisher Matt Paxson by almost 1,100 votes. Greenlaw said she received a call from Paxson, who told her he plans to support her during her four-year tenure. She hadn't spoken with Howe by 8 p.m. "Fred and I talked before the election and i told him 'when it's over it's over,'" Greenlaw said. Greenlaw said she also believes voters made it clear that the courthouse project planned for …

Barbara, you apparently are new to Fredericksburg Patch. I covered this election like it's never been done in this city before. I went to every event, every meeting, wrote story after story after story. As for Oktoberfest, I wrote 2 stories on it, maybe 3. Fredericksburg Patch had a Fredericksburg Elections 2012 page that included profiles, Q&As and much more. The FLS had videos and profiles. …   more ›

Five Questions With Mayoral Candidate Mary Katherine Greenlaw

Mary Katherine Greenlaw is a commercial real estate broker and also serves on City Council.

Question: If elected, would you support efforts to make changes to the scope and cost of the courthouse and even consider moving it further out of downtown and possibly near a city entranceway? Please be specific in your answers. I would not for the following reasons: For the past six years, City Council has considered how best to provide for the long-term needs of the courts.  At least seven different sites have been studied, including properties along William Street, Sophia Street, Caroline Street, Princess Anne Street, and Lafayette Blvd. The decision made more than four years ago to keep the courts downtown was the result of overwhelming public support. The plan that has been chosen is the most cost-effective way to accomplish the …

All great points, Tom. (Not sure #4 is the ONLY option, though ::grin::). The real question is she has been on Council for 4 years and hasn't done any of the things she is promising now. Period. End of story. It is easy to take ideas from the other candidates and their websites and mimic them; it is another thing to look at her track record and see she has done nothing but spend, spend, spend.   more ›

Greenlaw Holds Meet and Greet for the Public

Fredericksburg mayoral candidate Mary Katherine Greenlaw provided free donuts and coffee at a public meet-and-greet downtown on Saturday morning.

People visiting the Fredericksburg Farmers Market and Art in the Park at Hurkamp Park on Saturday were treated to free Krispy Kreme donuts, Blackstone Coffee, and the chance to meet and discuss issues with Fredericksburg mayoral candidate Mary Katherine Greenlaw. The informal “Breakfast with Mary Katherine” meet-and-greet was held from 10 a.m. to noon in the F.W. Sullivan’s parking lot across from Hurkamp Park. Event organizers estimated that more than 160 people came to the event over the two hours. Greenlaw fielded questions and mingled with visitors, and the crowd ebbed and flowed from just a couple of people to over a couple of dozen at a time. She said she was having a great time and that she had the chance to talk to quite a few …

Thanks for the comments and support of my professionalism Tom. I completely understand the concern voiced by Garrett and yourself, given my past comments. It is unfortunate that I had no way of knowing I was going to end up writing for Patch when I made those comments or I would never had said a thing. Had I never made any comments my opinions still would have been the same, they just would not …   more ›

Meet Mary Katherine Greenlaw Over Coffee

Fredericksburg mayoral candidate Mary Katherine Greenlaw is having a meet and greet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday across from Hurkamp Park. Free coffee!

Fredericksburg mayoral candidate Mary Katherine Greenlaw will have a meet and greet event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the parking lot across from Hurkamp Park. This will be her final event before the May 1 election when she faces challenges from councilman and small-business owner Fred Howe, and Matt Paxson, who's the associate pastor at Fairfiew Baptist Church. “I have walked door to door throughout Fredericksburg’s neighborhoods over the past weeks, listening to voters’ concerns and suggestions. Since the voters are sometimes not at home when I come by, this will provide a convenient opportunity for anyone to tell me what’s on their mind,” Greenlaw said.  “I have been huge fan of the Farmers’ Market for years. It’s an important …

I believe Paxson stated at the Idlewild Debate that he had already visited everyone in the City of Fredericksburg, but to my knowledge and after asking around, no one has seen him in our community, RiverWalk. I think he's a nice guy, but honestly, Howe is my choice. He walked door to door in our neighborhood and in the neighborhoods beside us, from what I have been told. And I support him 100% Go…   more ›

Greenlaw Fires Back At Courthouse Critics

Fredericksburg mayoral candidate Mary Katherine Greenlaw supports moving forward with the controversial project.

Mary Katherine Greenlaw, one of the three candidates running for Fredericksburg mayor, is defending her support of the $36 million courthouse project downtown that her two opponents have been criticizing for months. Greenlaw made the statements on her campaign website today and posted a message on her Facebook campaign site about the controversial courts project. One of her opponents, Fred Howe, has already promised to stop the courthouse project on Princess Anne Street to reconsider its scope and location. The third opponent, Matt Paxson, has said that the courthouse project cost too much and that it would waste taxpayer money. On her website, Greenlaw says constructing the new courthouse facility makes good use of the General District …

This is what I keep saying. Where is the proof? Well, there isn't any... Tomzak wants to go down in history, and Solley, Devine and Greenlaw agreed to help him, or at least that's the way it appears. Ellis, Paulocci and Howe are councilpersons' for the people, the other 4 are for themselves.   more ›

Riverfront Park's Future: What's The Best Next Step?

Should the city spend $200,000 for an updated riverfront park design? Some candidates running for office are questioning the expenditure proposed in the fiscal year 2013 budget.

Some of the candidates running for office in Fredericksburg are questioning the proposed $200,000 expenditure in the fiscal year 2013 budget for an updated design of the riverfront park. Fredericksburg mayoral candidate Fred Howe said he wants city administration to justify the $200,000 that's in the proposed budget for riverfront design plans and explain how it got in the budget in the first place. He asked them for the goal and objective of the expenditure, how it will compliment or further prior designs, how local residents are part of the process and any plans to deal with dredging and protection of the river walls. Howe plans to make the request at Tuesday's City Council meeting, which is the same day that Councilman George Solley …
