Power Outages Persist in Fredericksburg Region

Dominion and REC both report customers still without power.

As of 8 a.m. Friday, the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) outage chart reports: Dominion Virginia Power reports: Both companies report all their City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County customers have power. REC Monitors Weather in Anticipation of Power Outages

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative advises customers on winter weather preparations.

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) crews are preparing for possible interruptions in electric service resulting from the winter weather forecasted for this week.  The National Weather Services has issued a winter storm watch for Fredericksburg from Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening. Snow and ice could cause trees and limbs to fall onto power lines creating outages, according to an REC spokesperson. "In anticipation, REC has field personnel standing by to ensure service restoration is completed as quickly and safely as possible," REC said in a press release.  "With field forces already in place, other REC employees are transitioning from their normal work roles into storm assignments as needed in preparation for outages, should…

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative Names Director of Human Resources

Carolyn Schoonover has worked for REC for 16 years.

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) has promoted Carolyn Schoonover to director of human resources.  Schoonover has been with REC for 16 years serving in various human resources and accounting positions.  For the last two years she has been supervisor of the human resources department. Schoonover will assist the manager of human resources and employee development in managing the day-to-day human resources operations. Her primary responsibility will be directing the human resources staff and executing personnel policies and practices, particularly in the areas of personnel records and reports, benefits and services, payroll, personnel research, employee orientation and dissemination of information to employees. VDOT, Power Companies Prepare for Possible Snow

Customers are urged to be prepared with food and an emergency plan.

With a National Weather Service winter storm watch in place for the Fredericksburg area Thursday, personnel at Dominion Virginia Power, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are in preparation mode. Le-Ha Anderson, a Dominion Power spokeswoman, said the company is making sure their trucks are ready to respond if there are any power outages. She said the utility company has a team of meteorologists tracking the storm. “Wet snow with some wind could cause some power outages,” Anderson said. “We urge our customers to be prepared with an emergency plan with phone numbers and nonperishable food, just in case there are some outages.” VDOT will have hundreds of trucks ready to roll Thursday morning…

REC Offers Scholarships to High School Seniors

REC's scholarship program provides assistance to reduce educational expenses, such as tuition, books or room and board, for post high school education.

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) is offering several $1,000 scholarships to help area youth achieve their educational goals, according to Brian Wolfe, REC’s public relations specialist. Scholarship applications are now being accepted from high school seniors within the REC 22 county service area, which includes Fredericksburg. To be eligible, a student must be a current high school senior with a parent or guardian who is a member-owner of REC (meaning they receive electric service from the Cooperative), and be enrolled or plan to enroll in an accredited educational or training institution. Interested students must complete an application and write a 500-word essay. Applications can be picked up in local high school guidance …

Update: Power Outages in the Fredericksburg Area

Dominion Virginia Power and REC report outages due to Sandy.

Tuesday, Oct. 30, 8:30 a.m. Dominion Virginia Power reports three of their Fredericksburg customers are without power. In Spotsylvania County there are 72 clients without power. In Stafford County, Dominion reports they have 1,216 customers of their 45,769 without power. Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) reports nine outages in Spotsylvania County. They currently have no outages in Fredericksburg or Stafford County. Monday, Oct. 29. 8 p.m. Dominion Virginia Power reports 1,211 of their 14,139 Fredericksburg customers are without power as of 8 p.m. Monday.  In Spotsylvania County, the number is 300 of Dominion's 29,610 Spotsylvania County customers. Rappahannock Electric Cooperative Preparing for Sandy

REC provides power to some Fredericksburg residents.

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) crews are preparing for possible service interruptions, due to high winds and heavy rain forecast for the weekend and into early next week, REC said in a press release.  REC has field personnel standing by to make sure service is restored as quickly and safely as possible. With field forces already in place, other REC employees are transitioning from their normal work roles into storm assignments when needed in preparation for new outages, should they occur, according to the release. Tim Kaine Talks Energy With Rappahannock Electric Cooperative

U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine had a roundtable chat with employees at Rappahannock Electric Cooperative Monday afternoon.

U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine told employees at Rappahannock Electric Cooperative that he is pro-nuclear and pro-coal if its safe and cleaner. "I think the performance of North Anna during the earthquake offers some positives about the design and about response," Kaine said to just more than a dozen employees during a roundtable discussion Monday afternoon at the Cooperative in Fredericksburg. "I am in favor of continuing to explore safe nuclear" North Anna wants to built a third plant and still needs the permits. Kaine said France is a good example of a place where electricity is powered by nuclear compared to 35 percent in Virginia. I know that North Anna is still pursuing their permit.
