Rappahannock Adult Activities, Inc. (RAAI), a day support service of the Rappahannock Community Services Board, will hold its annual plant sale beginning April 20 at their 750 Kings Highway, Fredericksburg, location. Sale hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Proceeds provide scholarships to RAAI. During the organization's 27th Annual Mayfest Celebration on May 4, plants will be on sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. "RAAI participants have been working hard in our greenhouses and take great pride in their plants," Melessa Suder, horticulture specialist, said. A nonprofit that evaluates the financial health gave the Rappahannock United Way a high rating, which the president said is a sign that it is meeting its mission. Charity Navigator gave Rappahannock United Way (RUW) a four-star rating—a level obtained by only about 25 percent of the 5,000 nonprofits that it evaluates. Charity Navigator measures a charity’s ability to effectively manage and grow its finances. Rappahannock United Way uses 86.6 percent of its funds toward programming, with the remaining funds split between administrative and fundraising costs. Cathy Davis and her husband, Ron, are going to Alaska. Davis, the chairwoman of the board for the Rappahannock United Way, was one of 40 people across the nation to win the Cabot Community Celebrity award during the Cabot Community Tour 2012 event Saturday at Old Mill Park. As the winner, she got an all-expenses paid trip to Alaska, where she will be going with her husband, Ron, who was by her side to accept the award. Cabot Creamery Cooperative, best known as makers of "The World’s Best Cheddar,” created the event to recognize local people who make a difference in their communities. The Rappahannock United Way recognized Rev. Lawrence A. Davies with the Live United Award at a recent event to honor local volunteers for National Volunteer Week. The award given to Davies, the now retired pastor at Shiloh Baptist Church Old Site and past mayor of Fredericksburg, is for those who exemplify service to the community. Davies helped to establish the city's first low-income housing and oversaw the development of a public transportation system in Fredericksburg when he was mayor. Davies founded Citizens United for Action, a group dedicated to the advancement of civic activism, racial tolerance and voter education. When his family was impacted by sickle cell anemia, he and his wife helped bring attention to the disease by …

She and her roommate Cathy work side-by-side as they assemble baseball cards and various other donated items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday each week. Janine is a participant in the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board’s Supervised Apartment Program. While Janine and the other individuals in the program have intellectual disabilities, they are active members of our community. Not only does Janine work and live largely on her own—she also has to pay taxes. Rappahannock United Way will host its Annual Live United Awards Wednesday, April 18 from 12 to 2 p.m. to celebrate community volunteers. The awards are given to individuals and organizations whose service in the community makes an impact and inspires others. Reverend Lawrence A. Davies will speak at the event and will be recognized by the Rappahannock United Way. The theme for this year’s Live United Awards is a baseball tailgate party, and attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite baseball jersey or hat. The Rappahannock United Way will offer free credit counseling and credit reports to people who attend its Financial Freedom event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at its 3310 Shannon Park Drive facility. Volunteers from StellarOne will pull free credit reports and counsel people on their finances. At 10:30 a.m. there will be a money management workshop. The event is free, and no appointments are necessary. If you want counseling and a free credit report you should bring any credit reports you've had pulled recently and your bank accounts and credit information.
