Military, Dignitaries Salute Local Enlistees

Fredericksburg has its first "Our Community Salutes" program to honor local military enlistees. More than 60 young people were recognized at Monday night's event.

Decorated military men and U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman gave a boost of confidence Monday night to about 60 local high school graduates who are enlisting in the military during Our Community Salutes, the first event of its kind held in Fredericksburg. About 100 people attended the event in Dodd Hall at the University of Mary Washington. Fredericksburg parent Toni Stinson organized the event. Her son, Josh Stinson, is enlisting in the Marine Corps and gave the Pledge of Allegiance. Our Community Salutes is a national program designed to recognize young enlistees and it all started in New Jersey, said Randy Plunkett, who is retired from the Air Force and serves on the Our Community Salutes board of directors. I also was there. My son was one of the enlistees being honored, and we were truly blessed to be able to attend such a wonderful ceremony. Kudos to the Stinson family and all their hard work. It is greatly appreciated.   more ›
