Southwest Announces Richmond to Orlando Flights

Southwest Airlines said it will begin the new service November 3.

Southwest Airlines announced Tuesday it will begin service from Richmond International Airport (RIC) to Orlando, Fla., on November 3.  AirTran Airways, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southwest, will continue to operate nonstop service between Richmond and Atlanta. "To celebrate the new service, Southwest Airlines is launching a fare sale, offering nonstop flights starting as low as $79 one-way," Southwest said in a press release. The low fares are available for purchase through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 13 -- in the respective time zone of the originating city.  For example, Southwest is offering $89 one-way nonstop between Richmond and Orlando. Public Comment Sought on I-95 Study

If you can't make this week's public information meeting, VDOT is also accepting email, snail mail comments.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is soliciting input from area residents and motorists on how best to expand I-95 between Route 17 in Stafford County and Route 3 in Fredericksburg. The study will analyze the impacts of a variety of access and capacity improvements, including a new highway interchange between Route 17 and Route 3. The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration will be holding a Citizen Information Meeting to seek comment from the public on the I-95 access study. I-95 Travel Time Signs Debut Today

Motorists on I-95 will be able to get travel times on the fly from electronic highway signs.

Starting today, electronic signs along I-95 between Fredericksburg and Washington, D.C., will display travel times for the heavily trafficked highway. The Virginia Department of Transportation has been running a similar program since August on I-66 between the beltway and Gainesville. "Using travel data to display accurate travel times allows motorists to consider taking an alternate route before getting mired in traffic or, at the very least, know what to expect,” said Governor McDonnell in a press release. “Whether you are a daily commuter, long distance traveler or trucker, this information is helpful.” Travel information will be displayed on electronic billboards at seven locations, three for northbound motorists, four for southbound …

VDOT Says It's Ready For Winter

VDOT is hoping that a larger budget and better technology will help keep roads clear on snowy days.

Like the residents of Northern Virginia, the Virginia Department of Transportation remembers the interstates throughout the region being turned into parking lots during a snowstorm on Jan. 26. The storm dropped between 3 and 8 inches in some areas. Branco Vlacich, district maintenance administrator for VDOT, said $33 million was budgeted for snow removal in Northern Virginia last winter but $83 million was spent. This year VDOT has budgeted $55 million for snow removal in the region. Vlacich said VDOT arrived at the budgeted number after looking at how much was spent last winter, resources used and projected snowfall this winter. “We did anti-icing that morning but a lot of it washed away,” Vlacich said Thursday about the Jan. 26 snowstorm…
