Detour is lifted, but congestion begins 10 miles before incident scene.
FREDERICKSBURG – Interstate 95 southbound has re-opened at Exit 133/Falmouth in Stafford County following an earlier crash, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reported. Congestion is beginning to clear, but starts approximately 10 miles north of Exit 133 in North Stafford and southern Prince William. Motorists may encounter delays on southbound I-95 and southbound Route 1 in these areas as congestion clears the scene. The Safety Rest Area and Welcome Center at Fredericksburg on I-95 southbound has been closed temporarily, while vehicles involved in the earlier crash are moved to this facility. The National Weather Service predicts a wintry mix for the Fredericksburg area.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the cities of Fredericksburg and Culpeper and the counties of Orange, Culpeper, Spotsylvania, Stafford and Southern Fauquier. The wintry mix of snow and rain which began late Sunday afternoon is expected to continue overnight. Temperatures will remain above freezing, generally in the mid to upper 30s. "This means most roads in these areas will be wet or slushy, while about one inch of snow may accumulate on elevated and grassy surfaces," the NWS said. The rain and snow should change to all rain after 3 p.m. Monday. A high of 39 degrees is predicted. North winds at about 11 miles-per-hour could gust as high as 21 miles-per-hour. Two lanes will be closed during daytime hours March 20 for bridge repairs on the structure between Stafford and Fredericksburg, VDOT reports.
Two lanes will be closed on Chatham Bridge Wednesday between Fredericksburg and Stafford County so Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) staff can continue to fill a hole in an eastbound travel lane. "Both eastbound lanes will be closed on the bridge from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastbound," VDOT reported. Westbound traffic will narrow to a single lane and will cross the bridge in the westbound travel lanes. Traffic control will be provided by a flagging crew. Tuesday a VDOT bridge maintenance crew installed formwork below the hole, supported by braces, VDOT reported. VDOT crews are clearing and treating roads as weather conditions change.
Interstate 95 and primary roads are clear this morning in the Fredericksburg region, while snow is falling in western Spotsylvania County and secondary roads there have snow-covered patches, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) staff report. VDOT rates road conditions as: Road conditions vary along the Middle Peninsula. Primary roads in Essex, King & Queen and King William counties are in minor condition with isolated areas of snow. Secondary roads in King William, which received several inches of snow, are in moderate condition. The right eastbound travel lane on Chatham Bridge reopened Sunday, after a hole formed Saturday in the bridge deck and travel surface. The two foot by three foot hole on the Rt. 3 Business bridge between Fredericksburg and Stafford County was covered with several steel plates that span the width of the travel lane, VDOT reported. The plates were sealed with an asphalt mix used in cold temperatures. Permanent repair to bridge is scheduled for Tuesday. VDOT bridge maintenance forces will repair the hole from underneath the bridge. Concrete will be poured to fill the hole in the bridge deck, and asphalt will be used to restore the travel surface. The National Weather Service has issued the advisory for the Fredericksburg area, including the counties of Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, Stafford and Prince William.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for the area from 8 p.m. Sunday through 2 p.m. Monday. The Fredericksburg area could see rain changing to sleet and snow Sunday evening through Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Snow accumulations of one to two inches are expected. The heaviest snow is expected Sunday night, and is predicted to mix with sleet Monday morning before changing to rain Monday afternoon. Temperatures will be in the low 30s Sunday night into Monday morning, rising into the upper 30s Monday afternoon.
