Council Passes FRED Fare Hike

Per trip fares to climb to 75 cents.

The Fredericksburg City Council approved a first reading of a measure increasing fares for riders on the FRED bus system. The measure must pass a second reading before it becomes law. 

  • Among the proposed changes to the FRED fares are
  • An increase in fare for basic FRED service from 25 to 75 cents per boarding
  • An increase in the cost of a monthly pass for basic FRED service from $25 to $30. 

An increase in the fare for VRE feeder service from $1.25 to $1.50 per boarding. 

The last time FRED fares were increased was in July 2009 when the basic fare doubled to 50 cents per boarding. The VRE feeder bus fare increased to $1.25 per boarding and monthly passes for rose to $25 for regular service and $40 for VRE service.

The Public Transit Advisory Board also at the time recommended that FRED seek to reach a 12 percent fare revenue recovery rate by 2015. 

The increased fares are predicted to generate an additional $90,000 in addition revenue for FRED, raising the systems cost recover ratio to about 11 percent.
