Deputy Dies During Workout, Says Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office

Deputy Bryan Berger was 34. Sheriff thanks community for support.

A Spotsylvania County deputy died Monday morning during a workout at the criminal justice academy, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Bryan M. Berger, 34, was participating in calisthenic exercises when he began experiencing difficulty breathing. Berger collapsed and was rushed to Mary Washington Hospital where he died.

A statement on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page noted funeral arrangements are incomplete.

"Sheriff Harris would like to thank the public and law enforcement community for their continued support," the statement read. "Our agency's thoughts and prayers are with Bryan's wife and family during this difficult time."

Berger was assigned to the courts division of the Sheriff's Office, according to a Fredericksburg.com report.
