4-Year-Old Shot Through Hand

The child's mother and the mother's boyfriend were both arrested in the incident. Where an arrest is mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Fredericksburg Police responded to Mary Washington Hospital about 2:20 p.m. Sunday on report of a 4-year-old child with a gunshot wound through the hand.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that the child victim and his 8-year-old brother were visiting their mother at her apartment in the 1700 block of Lafayette Blvd., when the shooting occurred," Natatia Bledsoe, City of Fredericksburg Police spokesperson, said.

The mother of the children, Melissa Pendleton, 29, was arrested for
felony child neglect and allowing a child access to a firearm.

The mother’s boyfriend, Jemmell Conway, 31, of the home, was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony child neglect, and allowing a child access to a firearm.

Both Pendleton and Conway were incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail -- Pendleton under a $2500 bond and Conway under no bond, Bledsoe said.

The children were turned over to the custody of their paternal grandparents, who already have legal custody. The victim is expected to recover. The investigation is ongoing.
