Fredericksburg Resident Killed in I-95 Crash

The crash was caused by a woman driving the wrong direction on I-95 while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Where an arrest is mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Lucia Chavez, 48, of Fredericksburg, was killed early Wednesday when the car in which she was riding was hit by a car being driven the wrong direction on I-95.

Virginia State Police said Valerie F. Gorham, 51, of Silver Spring, Md. was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95 in Caroline County when she collided with the northbound vehicle, killing Chavez and injuring four other family members in the car.

Chavez died at the scene, police said.  The other four family members were taken to a hospital with serious but non-live-threatening injuries.

Gorham was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence and four counts of maiming while driving under the influence.  Gorham was not seriously injured in the crash.
