Human Remains Discovered Off Rt. 17

The Stafford County Sheriff's office said the remains were discovered Monday afternoon.

For the sixth time since August, law enforcement officers have discovered human remains along the I-95 corridor between Spotsylvania County and Alexandria.

 Decomposed human remains were found Monday afternoon by people playing in the woods behind GEICO on Rt. 17, Bill Kennedy, Stafford County Sheriff’s Office public information officer said.

The remains were sent to the Virginia Medical Examiner's office in Richmond, and the Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the Virginia Medical Examiners Office to identify this person.

On Nov. 3, Spotsylvania County Sheriff's discovered human remains on the Rappahannock Electric high voltage power line right of way.  Those were also sent to the Virginia Medical Examiners office.  No further information is yet available.

Landscape workers found human remains in Manassas on Sept. 14, according to the Manassas City Police Department. They were later identified as those of 51-year-old William Lewis Schaeffer Jr., of Manassas, Manassas Patch reported. His death is not considered suspicious, but is still under investigation.

"On Aug. 20, a construction crew working in the area of the northbound Interstate 395 Exit 3A ramp to eastbound Duke Street found skeletal remains off the highway," Inside Nova reported. "State police were unable to determine the gender or identity of the person, but said there are homeless camps in the area," the article said.

A truck driver pulled over on Interstate 95 near exit 140 in Stafford County found human skeletal remains Aug 16. 

Detectives were later able to identify the remains as Katherine Bryant of Washington, DC, Kennedy said in a press release.  Bryant's family reported her missing in 2006, when she was 33. Her death is considered suspicious, Kennedy said.

In nearby Prince William County, police found human remains on Aug. 15.

Anyone with information or who may recall anything out of the ordinary in these areas is asked to call local law enforcement.
