Unlawful Possession, Transport of 1,500 Cartons of Cigarettes

A Lorton man was charged in Fredericksburg with possession and transportation of cigarette packages without the required tax stamps.

The Northern Virginia Cigarette Tax Board received information about the possible transport from the Richmond area of a large amount of untaxed cigarettes and notified the Virginia State Police (VSP) and Fredericksburg Police Department, Natatia Bledsoe, police spokeswoman, said.

A VSP trooper stopped the suspect box truck on I-95 near mile marker 130 at 11:25 a.m. August 6 and discovered the untaxed cigarettes in the storage hold.

Fredericksburg police took possession of the evidence, 1,500 cartons of cigarettes, and charged the driver Sayed Marhoum, 46, of Lorton, under two city code violations:

  • Possession of cigarette packages without the required tax stamps;
  • Transportation of cigarette packages without the required tax stamps.
Marhoum was released by the officer on his own recognizance.
