Cuccinelli: 'War on Coal is War on the Poor'

Video: The Republican candidate for governor discussed issues including energy during a Fredericksburg visit Monday evening.

Virginia Attorney General and Republican candidate for governor Ken Cuccinelli met with a few hundred supporters in Fredericksburg July 22, reviewing for them Saturday's first debate and his stand on issues including education and energy.

"The war on coal in Virginia is a war on the poor," Cuccinelli said.  He said the APCO (Appalachian Power) service area -- where 80 percent of electricity is coal powered -- is one of the poorest parts of Virginia.  The coal industry, he said, is vital to the area's economic stability.

While he supports some renewal energy development, he disagrees with Democrat gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe's plan for 25 percent of Virginia's energy to come from renewable sources by 2025.  "That is bordering on California style energy policy," Cuccinelli said.

On Tuesday, Libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis will be in Fredericksburg.  The Fredericksburg Area Libertarians will host a 6 - 8 p.m. 'meet and greet' at Ledo's Pizza at Cosner's Corner.
